Papua New Guinea forests have valuable substances, says academic (2023) Alex Mylona Museum, Athens

A 23-minute piece commissioned for Giorgos Gerontides’s solo exhibition ‘A Flock of Fakes‘ at the Alex Mylonas Museum deals with the ongoing destruction of bird habitats around the world. It was presented on loop throughout the duration of the exhibition between 11 May – 25 June 2023.

Votanikos Industrials (2018) – A Knee on the Ground – Agricultural University, Athens – 1 June 2018

A Knee on the Ground - Votanikos Industrials - Andrew Spyrou

I practiced, performed and recorded ‘Votanikos Industrials’ a new improvised sound work using sounds recorded around the University’s grounds, and communications from a Korg Monologue synthesizer. A Knee on the Ground was part of Geometries, an exhibition curated by locusathens and produced and organised by the Onassis Cultural Centre

Tidalectics Radio – NTS Radio – 19 January 2018

Andrew Spyrou - NTS - Tidalectics NTS Andrew Spyrou Tidalectics

The exhibition Tidalectics collaborates with NTS Radio for a series of broadcasts. Tidalectics is an experiment to formulate an oceanic worldview, a different way of engaging with the oceans and the world we inhabit. Unbound by land-based modes of thinking and living, the exhibition is reflective of the rhythmic fluidity of water and the incessant swelling and receding of the tides. Sevu-Sevu: Expedition Log (2017) – Hamburger Bahnhof – 28 October 2017

Andrew Spyrou - Hamburger Bahnhof 4 - 28-10-17 Andrew Spyrou - Hamburger Bahnhof 1 - 28-10-17 18

A new sound piece composed from recordings taken during the most recent TBA21-Academy expedition, to Fiji and Tonga. During the first leg of the 30-hour crossing from the Lau Islands Group to Tonga, I composed a sonic portrait of the expedition vessel, the M/V Dardanella, using only recordings made around the ship. Here, as part of Fishing For Islands at the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, this material is set against other manipulated environmental sounds recorded on the expedition.

Occupy Atopos: Echogeographies – Explorations into Urban Sonics – 22-24 September 2017

Occupy Atopos - Andrew Spyrou - Echogeographies - Spathumpa

I invited five participants, Alexandros Drymonitis, Alyssa Moxley, Antidröm, Delia Gonzalez and Kostadis, to be commissioned to each prepare a new sound work utilising only recordings and sonic inspirations encountered within a 0.5km radius around Atopos cvc in the Metaxourgeio area of Athens, each of which were exhibited in individual rooms around the restored Neoclassical townhouse in which Atopos cvc is located. South Pacific Migration Party – Peter Zinovieff

Breaching - Susannah Buchan

In close collaboration with sound art curator Andrew Spyrou, synthesizer pioneer Peter Zinovieff has composed an extended computer work, South Pacific Migration Party, using exclusively as a sound source the hydrophone recordings of Blue Whales recorded by oceanographer Susie Buchan off the coast of Chile. Unlike the more familiar Humpback Whale, their songs consist of repeated low-frequency vibrations followed by contrasted high-frequency calls. The piece has been performed a number of times and will see a physical release during 2020.

Performances:

documenta 14, Athens – 1 June 2017 – World Premiere

Explorer’s Club, NYC – A Contemporary Exploration, 5-9 June 2017 – during UN Oceans Conference

TBA21-Augarten, Vienna – Ephemeropterae – 16 June 2017 – B-Format rendering for 92-channel ambisonic soundsystem

Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin – Fishing For Islands – 28 October 2017 – re-composed for 2 quadraphonic systems

I performed a new sound work, composed and improvised live using only my archive of sounds from the city of Athens as source material.

Enter The Dragon – Andrew Spyrou & Antidröm

As part of Zhang Ding’s Enter The Dragon at the ICA in London, on 17 October 2015 I performed an electronic manipulation of disappearing tribal musics recorded in the jungles of the East Sepik region of Papua New Guinea, in a room inspired by the final scene of Bruce Lee’s iconic film.

OCT17-17 edit

A Shanghai sound collage (first 12 minutes) and mix of instrumental electronic music (last 28 minutes) I put together for Kit Records in late 2013. Full tracklist and interview here.
